Emily joined Drexel in 2001 with a BS in Metals and Materials Engineering from University of British Columbia. She quickly was involved in research and has focused her work on materials intended to replace bone tissue. The first part of Emily’s doctoral work is aimed at using local mechanical properties (nanoindentation) to examine the interfacial interactions of bioactive composites. These materials have wide application as bone tissue substitutes. Her work has led to a graduate student research award at Drexel University’s Research Day competition, a summer fellowship award from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and a Drexel University Dean’s fellowship. Emily has presented her work at national conferences. Her work has been accepted by the journal, Dental Materials and has received a grant from American Academy of Implant Dentistry. The second part of Emily’s doctoral work is utilizing a thermoreversible hydrogel as an injectable structural bioactive bone replacement for fracture fixation.

In addition to Emily’s scholarship, she has displayed attributes that are highly desirable in an independent researcher. Emily is extremely competent with the English language. She has excellent oral presentation skills and has proven her written language skills not only in her research, but in classroom papers and projects as well, as her grades will attest. Emily is an extremely motivated and hard worker with natural leadership ability. Her very good nature and upbeat, can-do personality make working with her a pleasure. Emily has maturity beyond her years which is especially evident in that she is as comfortable talking with authority figures as with her classmates, also she is extremely responsible and organized.

Examples of Emily’s talents lie in her awards for Drexel University Business Plan Competition and SFU International Business Plan Competition. Emily and her team partner competed with other engineering students, scientists and business majors in her plan for a start up company in both competitions. Through a series of written and oral rounds of review, Emily’s team was awarded second place for Drexel University’s competition and also was the final 25 out of 200 teams completed in the SFU international competition. The enthusiasm that Emily conveyed during the presentation and leadership skills contributed to the success of this endeavor and demonstrated that Emily’s abilities reach beyond her scholarship.
