Carl Imhauser received his B.Sc. from Temple University in Electrical Engineering (magna cum laude) and he is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics at Drexel University. The focus of Imhauser’s doctoral research is orthopaedic biomechanics. Specifically, he developed and evaluated image-based, patient-specific numerical models of the human ankle joint. This research combines the fields of radiology, image processing, CAD design and numerical modeling. The goals of this work include the optimization of surgical procedures including joint fusions, joint replacement and ligament repair. Imhauser’s long-term goals are to continue work that has a far-reaching impact on treatment methods for patients with orthopedic problems ranging from sprained ankles to osteoarthritis. In 2003 Imhauser was a recipient of Drexel’s prestigious Koerner Fellowship which recognizes graduate students with the highest potential to become successful faculty members. Imhauser is an outstanding scholar, an effective teacher and an excellent role model and a rising star!

During his graduate studies, Imhauser accumulated an impressive list of accomplishments and awards. With three archival journal papers already published and several in various stages of completion, he participated in a number of important conferences including the 4th World Congress of Biomechanics and 18th Congress of the International Society of Biomechanics (Switzerland) as well as attending the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Engineered Nanofibrous Materials (Turkey).

In addition to attending conferences, Imhauser has gained valuable work experience through three short-term assignments in Germany (1995, 1996 and 1997). Upon completion of his doctoral work in August, Imhauser will be pursuing post-doctoral studies for six-months under the prestigious German Academic Exchange (DAAD) Fellowship in Ulm, Germany at the Institute of Orthopedic Research and Biomechanics.

As an undergraduate, Imhauser was on full scholarship as NCAA Division-1 gymnast at Temple University and also the captain of his team. He was the NCAA Division-1 National High Bar champion in 1996. He was nominated for the Nissen Award as one of the nation’s top seven outstanding senior student-athletes by collegiate gymnastics coaches in 1997. Along with his strong academic and athletic performances, he was honored with the George Wallace Hayes Memorial Award that recognizes high ideals, courage, enthusiasm and sincere concern for the welfare of his teammates.
