Steven May, PhD, department head and professor of materials science and engineering, has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). The APS Fellowship Program recognizes members who have made significant contributions to physics through original research, publication, or innovative applications in science and technology. No more than 0.5% of the membership may be elected to the program each year.

May was elected through the APS Division of Materials Physics for his significant contributions to understanding structural, electronic, and magnetic properties in complex oxide heterostructures. This honor places him among the elite in his field and alongside fellow Materials professors Christopher Li and Jonathan Spanier, who were elected in 2012 and 2016, respectively.

The APS represents over 50,000 members in academia, industry and national labs.
