Yury Gogotsi, PhD, has received two prestigious honors for his pioneering work on nanomaterials. Gogotsi was named a 2022 National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellow and will receive the 2023 Jan Czochralski Award from the European Materials Research Society.

As an NAI Fellow, Gogotsi is recognized for his prolific innovations that have made major impacts. He leads a team that discovered MXenes, a groundbreaking family of two-dimensional materials with applications in electromagnetic shielding, water filtration, radio transmission, kidney dialysis and more. Gogotsi holds dozens of patents and frequently presents his research globally.

The Czochralski Award honors Gogotsi’s lifetime achievements in materials science. It is named for the Polish scientist Jan Czochralski, inventor of a method for producing semiconductor crystals that enabled modern electronics. Past recipients include Nobel laureate Shuji Nakamura.

“It’s a great honor to receive an award named for Jan Czocharlski, especially since I’ve known his name since my time as a chemical metallurgy student, which he also studied,” Gogotsi said. “I worked for many years and received my NSF CAREER award for research on phase transformations in semiconductors produced by Czocharlski method, and his work has inspired many other aspects of my research.”
